Stealing
The original and still main purpose of the stealing skill is to lift things out of another player's backpack, moving it into your own. Because blessed and insured items cannot be stolen, and so many players insure so many items, thieves have had it hard. Even so, thieves can steal anything that is not or cannot be insured; particularly cursed items such as power scrolls. It also happens surprisingly often, that players will simply forget or be too lazy to insure things they've just received, and a thief will be sure to notice that.
To steal an item, activate the stealing skill from the skill list. You can then target either the specific item you want to steal in a person's backpack, or you can target the player to attempt to steal something at random.
Higher stealing skill gives you a higher chance of success in stealing an item, and also increases the maximum weight that you can steal in one attempt. However, even at 120 stealing skill, there is always a chance that you will be detected while stealing. When this happens you will turn criminal, and if you're in town, the guards will punish you for the crime.
Once an item is successfully stolen from a player, it is still not completely safe. If you've stolen something very valuable, you will want to hide someplace far away, because if you die within 2 minutes of having stolen an something from a player, the stolen item will be automatically returned to the person it was stolen from. Items that have recently been stolen cannot be insured.
Joining the Thieves' Guild
In order to steal from players, you must be a member of the thieves' guild. There are several requirements to join the thieves' guild: you cannot be a young player, you cannot have any kills to your name, and you must have at least 60 stealing skill. The character must have at least 2 days game age as well as 7 days of real time age. If you fulfill those requirements, find a thief guildmaster in any tavern; for example there are three thief guildmasters in Britain alone. Walk up to the thief guildmaster and say "{name} join", using whatever their name is.
Once you are in the thieves' guild, other players can detect that you are a thief by using the forensic evaluation skill. There is really nothing you can do to avoid this. If you murder a player, you will be suspended from the thieves' guild and unable to steal until you lose the murder count.
One additional benefit of being in the thieves' guild is the ability to use a disguise kit. To purchase one, go to the thief guildmaster and say "{name} disguise". They will tell you the price of a disguise kit, so drop the gold on them. A disguise kit changes your appearance as well as your name for two hours, allowing you to steal with some anonymity.
In addition to stealing from players, the stealing skill can also be used to steal the artifacts from dungeon Doom, the Yomotsu Mines, and the Fan Dancer Dojo. Having your skill at 120 greatly increases your chances.
Stealing is also used in factions, to steal town sigils for capture.
It is not necessary to be a member of the thieves' guild to steal artifacts or sigils. It also is not necessary when you are stealing from NPCs, from guildmates, or from murderers (reds).
Training
To train stealing, it is convenient to have a guildmate who also needs to train the skill. Buy a bunch of the item you will train stealing on, and have your training partner do the same. Then stand next to each other and steal from each other. This way you will have a constant supply of items to steal without having to worry about moving things around.
For fastest training, steal items of the maximum weight you are allowed to steal for your given skill level. If you don't have items of the maximum weight to train with, items that are a few stones lighter can still be used for training, though progress may be slower. The maximum weight you can steal for a given skill level is:
0-7.5: 2 stones (many crafting tools)
7.5-17.5: 3 stones (lute, bone harvester, dyes)
17.5-27.5: 4 stones (shepherd's crook, hatchet, drums)
27.5-37.5: 5 stones (shovel, composite bow, wooden shield, buckler)
37.5-47.5: 6 stones (bow, broadsword, bronze shield)
47.5-57.5: 7 stones (crossbow, bardiche, metal kite shield)
57.5-67.5: 8 stones (smith's hammer, scepter, heater shield)
67.5-77.5: 9 stones (heavy crossbow, hammer pick)
77.5-87.5: 10 stones (lap harp, war hammer)
87.5-97.5: 11 stones (pickaxe, pitchfork)
97.5-107.5: 12 stones (lance, ornate axe, iron ore)
107.5-117.5: 13 stones (nothing?)
117.5-120: 14 stones (mace)
