Resisting Spells
Magic Resistance, or Resisting Spells, is an essential skill for any player, especially if you are ever in a PVP situation.
The most obvious benefit of having magic resistance is in your natural resistances. With 100 magic resistance, you will have 40% in each resistance automatically, even when naked. For a relatively new player this is a great benefit, as you may not be able to find good armor for a while. Or you can wear armor that has only physical resistance (a spined leather set) without having to worry about elemental resistances. Increasing your skill to 120 gives you 44% in each resistance.
Note that the natural resistance benefit is not cumulative with armor. For example if you have 40% natural resistance, wearing a piece of armor with 10% physical resistance will provide no benefit. You won't notice any armor resistance benefit until the resistances of the armor are higher than your natural resistance.
A less obvious but equally important use of magic resistance is the ability to resist spells. The main spells that is affected is magery spell, paralyze. If you have low magic resistance, a single paralyze spell from a skilled mage can result in a very long paralysis - so long that the follow-up spells while you were paralyzed are fatal. Low magic resistance makes you more susceptible to the poison spell; having high magic resistance will allow you to resist the poison spell sometimes. Magic resistance also provides stronger resistance against paralysis fields.
Training
The fastest way to train magic resistance is to repeatedly cast the magery spells clumsy or weaken on yourself. Have some guildmates cast on you as well for even faster training.
