Power Scrolls
Normally you can raise each skill to 100. At that level you are called a Grandmaster of that skill, and are guaranteed success in many of the skill-related activities you would like to do.
However you can increase the effectiveness of a skill by raising your skill level beyond 100. In order to do this you need to acquire and use a power scroll for that particular skill. Using such a power scroll raises your skill cap; you can then train that skill up to your new cap. Each power scroll specifies what it will raise your cap to - 105, 110, 115, or 120. Power scrolls are not cumulative; if you use a 105 anatomy power scroll and then use a 110 anatomy power scroll, your anatomy cap will be 110 (not 115).
Power scrolls can be acquired from several sources. Some are rewards from quests; some are rewards from animal taming contracts or blacksmithy and tailoring bulk order deeds. However the majority of power scrolls are acquired from killing champions at champion spawns.
In addition to power scrolls that raise your skill cap, it is also possible to acquire a stat scroll that raises your stat cap. Stat scrolls can be in levels of +5, +10, +15, +20, or +25. They can only be acquired by killing a special champion, the Harrower.
Champion Spawns
A champion spawn is a series of monsters leading to a champion monster. Champion spawns are always found at a champion's altar as shown above. The goal is to kill enough of the monsters fast enough for the champion to come. The champion is a specific monster which, when killed, has a chance of rewarding you with a power scroll if you did sufficient damage to the champion. When the champion is killed, gold rains onto the ground, and the champion's loot can also be valuable. In addition, artifacts can be acquired by killing the monsters and champion at a champion spawn. See the Champion Artifacts page for more details.
Champion spawns are found at altars, but altars are not always active. An active spawn is blue and lit; an inactive spawn is ark and grey. An inactive spawn can be activated by using the Valor virtue - double click the valor virtue from the virtue window (above your head in the paperdoll) and target the skull on the champion altar. You gain Valor by killing the tougher monsters in a champion spawn. If you do not have sufficient Valor to activate a champion, you can either look for another altar, or wait and check the altar some other time. Inactive champion spawns activate themselves in time, at random.
You cannot use valor to activate the same champion spawn type twice in a row. The new player champions in trammel are excluded from this - they may be activated twice in a row, and do not reset your last-activated champion. You cannot constantly switch between a new player champion and a normal champion.
Once you've found an active champion spawn, the champion will not come forth until you have proved your worth by killing the monsters there. You must kill a lot of monsters very quickly, with the monsters increasing in difficulty as you go. The red and white candles on the altar show your progress. Each red candle indicates a level you've achieved; once you have 16 red candles, you are very close to bringing forth the champion. To gain a level you must kill a certain number of champion spawn monsters within ten minutes. White candles represent your progress within the level. Once you kill enough monsters you gain a red candle; if ten minutes pass and you have not killed enough monsters, you lose the white candles. If you've made no progress in a level, you can even lose red candles.
As you gain red candles, the monsters you fight will change. All champion spawns have four stages of monsters that you will battle.
Upon completion of the 16th red candle and its white candles, the champion may appear - there is a random chance. If the champion does not appear, you will need to complete the 16th red candle and its white candles again for another opportunity to summon the champion, but each subsequent time that you proceed with the 16th red candle, the number of monsters you need to kill is reduced. Once the champion is summoned, the candles disappear and and all that remains is to defeat the champion. Using valor to advance the spawn at the 16th candle will always summon the champion.
There are a variety of different champion spawns. In some cases the champion itself is extremely tough, however usually it's the spawn itself that poses the biggest problem. Regardless, a champion spawn is not normally something you will want to tackle without a reasonable-sized party.

Champion Locations
Champion spawn altars are located in many locations.
New Haven - The Enslaved Daemon and Orcish Horde new player champion spawns can appear in two dungeons accessible from New Haven. One altar is on the third level of dungeon Wrong, and the other is in the catacombs below Haven Cemetery. These are the only non-pvp champion spawn altars.
Felucca Dungeons - There are fixed champion altars in a few of the dungeons:
- Fire Dungeon - Abyss
- Despise - Vermin Horde
- Destard - Cold Blood
- Terathan Keep - Arachnid
- Deceit - Unholy Terror
Ilshenar - There are two semi-random champion altars, plus one altar that is always the Forest Lord.
Lost Lands - There are quite a few champion altars throughout the lost lands. All of them are semi-random except for one which is always the Forest Lord.
Isamu-Jima - The Sleeping Dragon champion altar is northwest of Mount Sho.
Twisted Weald - The Twisted Glade champion altar is near the entrance to the Twisted Weald.
Bedlam - The Pestilence champion altar is in the crypt under Bedlam.
Stygian Abyss - The Pit and Unliving champion altars are located in specific areas within the Stygian Abyss.
The Harrower
In most cases, you will find a skull as loot on the champion's corpse. There are six different skulls for different champions. When you have all six different skulls, you can take them to the star room (via a moongate in the terathan keep) and place the skulls on the altar of the Harrower. The Harrower will then be summoned and will appear in a random dungeon in Felucca. A moongate will appear on the altar, leading you to the dungeon where the Harrower has appeared. Killing the Harrower will reward 8 total stat scrolls to those players who did sufficient damage to him.
Receiving Power Scrolls
When fighting a champion spawn, usually it's the waves of monsters that are the difficult part, rather than the champion itself. However, only the champion awards power scrolls; even if you did most of the work killing the monsters, if you don't attack the champion you have no chance of receiving a power scroll. All players who did enough damage to the champion to receive looting rights have an equal chance of receiving power scrolls. (You know you did enough damage by whether or not you can loot the champion's corpse without turning criminal.) Regular champions award 6 power scrolls split among the players, and if there are fewer than 6 players then some will receive more than one power scroll. The harrower awards 8 stat scrolls split among the players.
In addition to the power scrolls awarded by the champion, there is also a small chance of receiving a power scroll from killing any monster at a champion spawn. These power scrolls are always +5 scrolls. The chance of receiving these power scrolls increases as the level of the champion spawn increases, but in all cases the chances are relatively low. The justice virtue bonus does not apply to these scrolls.
Power Scroll Value
Because the power scrolls you receive from a champion are random, after doing a few champion spawns you may end up with power scrolls that you do not need. Even so, power scrolls have reasonable sell/trade value with other players. If you're in a hurry to dump your PS's, there are traders in Skara Brae who will happily exchange your power scrolls for white reward tokens.
