Parrying
Parrying is an essential part of your defense against weapons. At high skill levels you can parry over 1/3 of all weapon-based attacks.

For best results you must have at least 80 dexterity. If your dexterity is below 80 you will still parry, but at lower rates according to your dexterity. If your dexterity is over 80, your parry rate is based only on your skill level.

To train parrying, wear a shield and get attacked. The most common way to gain skill quickly is by going to farmland such as in britain, attacking all of the chickens at once, and leaving war mode. Thus you'll have a lot of chickens attacking you and your shield, training your parrying skill, but not doing much damage to you.

Note that the parrying skill is closely tied to the bushido skill. Most newer players will have best results if they do not train the bushido skill, as this will maximize their parrying ability. If you have some bushido skill, your parrying ability with a shield is reduced, however you gain the ability to parry without a shield. At very high levels of bushido, wearing a shield will be a handicap, as your parry rate with a weapon will be much higher without a shield than with a shield.

If at some point your bushido skill is higher than your parrying skill, you will be unable to train parrying with a shield; you should train parrying with a weapon only.
