Lesser and Greater Artifacts
Lesser and Greater Artifacts are rare pieces of equipment that can be found as loot almost anywhere in the world. They look similar to normal loot and have random properties like other loot, but have a few additional properties:
Cursed - These artifacts cannot be insured and you cannot recall from a dungeon when carrying them. This property can be removed by using Soul Reinforcement.
Brittle - These artifacts cannot be repaired.
Deterioration - These artifacts start with 10/10 durability and will deteriorate over time. This can be remedied by using Soul Reinforcement.
Named - Lesser artifacts always have either a prefix or a suffix in the name. Greater artifacts will have a prefix or a suffix, or both.
Bonus Properties - Lesser artifacts will have a bonus property corresponding to its name. Greater artifacts may have one or more bonus properties. In the samples below, the Auspicious Heater Shield is a Lesser Artifact and the "Auspicious" prefix reflects the 10 luck that the shield has. Bonus properties may be (but are not always) properties that are not normally found on that type of equipment, and may have intensities higher than normally possible.

Lesser and Greater Artifacts cannot be found in the Doom Gauntlet or Trammel. In Ter Mur, the chances of finding gargish artifacts is increased. There is a significantly higher chance of finding artifacts in Khaldun, but the monsters are tougher there. Wearing luck equipment will increase your chance of finding these artifacts.

Soul Reinforcement
All lesser and greater artifacts will deteriorate into nothingness unless Soul Reinforcement is performed. However, Soul Reinforcement is a costly procedure that you may not want to use on every artifact that you find.
To perform Soul Reinforcement, use the imbuing skill at any soul forge and choose the Soul Reinforcement option, then target the artifact you wish to reinforce. This process requires a full (10 use) powder of fortifying, plus 50 relic fragments to reinforce a greater artifact or 25 relic fragments to reinforce a lesser artifact. Soul Reinforcement can only be performed by a grandmaster artificer.
Soul Reinforcement will imbue the item with magic, removing the curse so the item can be insured, though the item will remain brittle. Its durability will be increased to 200/200, or 255/255 if the item has a magic durability bonus. A material durability bonus (such as the bonus from enhancement with shadow iron) will not help.
Because imbued items cannot be enhanced with special materials, you should enhance your artifacts before you perform soul reinforcement. After reinforcement, a lesser artifact will often have room for additional properties to be imbued onto it. Don't forget to insure your equipment after reinforcement.
