Imbuing
Imbuing is the magical craft of adding magical properties to equipment. The associated ability, unraveling, is the art of extracting magical components from magical equipment. To imbue and unravel items, activate the imbuing skill from the skill list.
In order to imbue or unravel items, you must be standing near a soulforge. A soulforge can be crafted and placed in your house, however it is to your advantage to use a public soulforge. The soulforge in the Royal City in Ter Mur provides a bonus to both imbuing and unraveling. The Queen's soulforge provides a slightly greater bonus, however you must be regarded as a noble in the eyes of the Queen in order to use that soulforge.
Creatures of any race can use the imbuing skill, however gargoyles receive a very small bonus in it.
The imbuing skill is also passively used to determine the effectiveness of certain Mysticism spells, similar to the relationship between Magery and Evaluating Intelligence.
Unraveling
To unravel items, activate the imbuing skill and select the unravel option from the menu. This will extract one of three magical components from a piece of equipment: magical residue, enchanted essence, or relic fragment. If unraveling fails, the original item remains untouched and you can try again. If unraveling is successful, you receive the component and the item is destroyed. Most magical equipment can be unraveled, including artifacts. Cursed, blessed, and insured items cannot be unraveled.
The purpose of unraveling is to acquire the magical components, as they are necessary for imbuing. The component you receive is dependent on the magical intensity of the item unraveled. Items with under 200 intensity points unravel into magical residue, items with 200-479 intensity unravel into enchanted essences, and items with 480 and higher intensity unravel into relic fragments.
Imbuing
Use the imbuing menu to imbue an item with magical properties. Most equipment can be imbued with magic, including artifacts.
In order to imbue a property you must have the required amount of imbuing skill, and you must have the required ingredients. The ingredients vary depending on the property being added; the ingredients are shown in the imbuing menu. The ingredients are consumed when you attempt to imbue, regardless of whether you are successful or not.
When an item is imbued, it is changed forever: the property that you imbued cannot be removed (though the intensity can be raised or lowered), and the item is marked as (Imbued) in the properties. Imbued equipment can be repaired, however all imbued equipment automatically becomes Brittle; powder of fortification cannot be applied to it. This applies to jewelry as well: imbued jewelry will have durability (initially set to 255) and can wear down with use. In addition, imbued equipment cannot be enhanced with colored materials such as valorite ingots.
Every piece of equipment has an absolute amount of total magical intensity. This is measured by the intensity of each magical property, and the weight of the magical properties. For example a weapon with only one magical property, Swing Speed Increase 15%, has a total intensity of 55: the SSI property has a weight of 110, and the maximum SSI is 30%, so an item with 15% SSI has an intensity of 55. For an item with two properties, add the intensity of each property together.
The imbuing skill can only imbue properties up to a maximum intensity of 500 for jewelry and exceptionally crafted equipment, and 450 for all other equipment. In addition, an item can only have up 5 different properties, including resistance bonuses.
Besides the three main components obtained by unraveling, most of the components required for imbuing are found in Ter Mur as loot, or as harvested materials.
Most normal armor, weapons, and jewelry can be imbued. In addition, gargish wing armor can be imbued. Items such as glasses, quivers, talismans, and clothing (excluding hats) cannot be imbued. Blessed or cursed items cannot be imbued.

Training
Imbuing can be trained by imbuing or unraveling.
Each time you unravel an item you may gain in imbuing skill, provided there is some chance of failure. Using this method to train imbuing is limited by the fact that you need to have magical equipment to unravel. This is easy at low skill levels as you only need relatively weak magical items, but at high skill levels you may find it easier to train by imbuing items.
To train with imbuing, imbue items with properties that have a high rate of failure as well as a low material cost. For example attempting to imbue 2% hit life leech only requires 1 magical residue and 1 ruby. Adjust the rate of failure by attempting to imbue this property on various weapons - a weapon with no properties will be useful for training low skill levels; when you have high skill you will need to imbue onto weapons that already have high magical properties.
Once an item has been imbued 20 times, you can continue to imbue it but you will gain no skill from doing so.
Soul Reinforcement
Soul Reinforcement is a different type of imbue that can only be applied to Lesser and Greater Artifacts. Read about Lesser and Greater Artifacts here.
