Fishing
Fishing can be both a relaxing and a lucrative hobby. The primary pieces of equipment you need are a fishing pole and a ship, thouhg it also helps to bring some form of defense as there are monsters that roam the seas.
There are two basic types of fishing: shallow and deep sea fishing. Fishing in the shallows can get you some fish to cook/eat/sell, but not much more. The treasures of the sea are generally found in deep water.
Here are the things you may catch:
Fish: Sell them, chop them into steaks and cook them, or feed your pets.
Footwear: Wear other people's old shoes, sell them, or throw them away.
Big fish: A large fish that you'll want to keep as a trophy rather than eat.
Magical fish: Small fish that, when eaten, provide magical effects for a brief period.
When fishing you may also awaken creatures that are too large to be caught, but may have some of the following items as loot:
Special fishing net: These can be used in deep water and will fish up "special" creatures. The creatures sometimes have unusual loot.
Treasure map: Normal treasure maps you can complete.
Message in a bottle: Each bottle will contain a distress message that can lead you to a shipwreck. Shipwrecks typically have a variety of decorative treasures. Some bottles will contain an ancient SOS, which has a chance of giving a fabled fishing net. A fabled fishing net is similar to a special fishing net, but has a chance of rewarding you with prized loot.
White pearls: Used for crafting magical equipment, white pearls are sometimes fished up directly, and sometimes found as loot on tougher sea serpents.
Training the fishing skill is relatively simple; keep fishing until you get your skill to 100. A given area will have a limited amount of fish, so you will need to fish in many locations.
Handling a ship: A proper fisherman must learn how to handle a ship. Purchase a ship deed from a shipwright or provisioner. All ships are basically the same; larger ships give you more room to walk around, but are harder to maneuver in tight places.
Use a ship deed near water to launch the ship. Once your ship is launched, a ship key will be in your backpack. Insure the key immediately! Many ships have been lost because owners forgot to insure their key. If something goes wrong, you are also given a copy of the key in the bank. Hopefully you won't need to use it, but if necessary you should insure that key too.
Once you've launched the ship, unlock it using your ship key and targeting the side of the ship. Then double click the side of the ship to open the plank, and double-click the plank to board.
The tillerman of the ship obeys any verbal command from nearby players. (This can be problematic if you have enemies on board your ship!) Use any of the following commands to control your ship:
Movement commands: forward, back/backward, left, right
Movement commands can be modified as follows: slow , one
Directional commands: turn right, turn left, come about/turn around
You can also control the ship manually. Double-click the wheel to take control of it, then use your mouse as if walking; this will move the ship as if you were moving yourself. Ships have two speeds, controlled by whether you are walking or running with your mouse. Double-click the wheel or yourself to release the wheel.
An unattended boat will, in time, decay and sink. If you want to keep your boat, you can visit it and double-click the plank to refresh it. However the simplest way to keep your ship is to drydock it. Take your ship to a landing and leave the ship. Single-click the wheel/tillerman and select the option to drydock the ship. This effectively shrinks the boat, and is the safest way of handling a ship that is not in use.
