Shields
Unless you're a samurai, shields are used to parry weapon attacks. If you have 0 Bushido skill, you should hold a shield for maximum parry chance; parrying without a shield cuts your parry chance in half. On the other hand if you have high (100 or more) Bushido, your ability to parry with a shield is minimal, and you will parry more effectively without a shield.
Shields also provide some magical bonuses. Even if you are a Bushido user, you may find situations in which you prefer to use a shield strictly for the magical properties provided. Here are the useful properties:
Hit Chance Increase
Defense Chance Increase
Spell Channeling
Faster Casting 1
Reflect Physical Damage
Established players generally use shields with HCI, DCI and either spell channeling (if there is no faster casting penalty) if they fight with magery, or faster casting 1 if they don't. It is typical to use a shield found as loot and enhance it with colored ingots to boost the resistances. Shield enhancement usually has a relatively high success rate. Runic crafted shields rarely have the magical properties found on looted shields.
There is little difference between the types of shields. Wooden shields are crafted by carpenters, and for that reason can be easily repaired on the fly as there is no need for a forge and anvil to repair them. Metal kite shields can be dyed with cloth dye tubs; other shields cannot be dyed (except with Tokuno dyes). Each shield type has a different 1% resist bonus.
