Equipment Guide
Equipment is a very important part of Ultima Online, and figuring out what to use and when to use it is critical for your success.
Equipment is a general term for things that are worn or equipped. To equip an item, drag and drop it onto your paperdoll. Drag and drop it from your paperdoll to remove it.
Each piece of equipment takes a particular slot, or layer. For example a chainmail tunic takes the same slot as a leather tunic, so you cannot wear both of those items at the same time.
Acquiring
There are many ways to acquire equipment, though generally the best equipment is the most difficult to get.
Purchase from NPC - Standard equipment purchased from an NPC shopkeeper is readily available and cheap.
Normal crafting - Standard equipment crafted by a player is generally better than you can purchase from an NPC shopkeeper.
Runic crafting - Equipment crafted using runic tools can range widely in quality; high quality runic crafted equipment can be the best available in game.
Loot from monsters - Equipment found as loot from monsters can range from standard low quality equipment to superior, highly prized equipment. The best equipment is generally found from the toughest monsters.
Buying from players - There are plenty of players who are eager to sell or trade their equipment to you. Be careful in your trades - a deal that looks too good to be true usually is!
Repairing
Most weapons and armor suffer wear over use. Weapons wear down when fighting; armor and shields wear down when you are hit. A skilled craftsman can repair your equipment; they must have the crafting skill that is appropriate for your type of equipment - blacksmithy, tailoring, tinkering, carpentry, etc. When an item is successfully repaired the durability is restored to its maximum value, however the maximum durability drops by one. Higher crafting skill reduces the failure rate when attempting to repair. The maximum durability can be increased by using powder of foritification on it, which is obtainable by doing blacksmith bulk orders.
Crafters can also create and sell repair deeds, allowing others to repair items without having to hand over their valued items. To create a repair deed, select the "repair" option in the crafting menu, and target a blank scroll. To use a repair deed you must be in the respective shop for the type of repairs being made.
Weapons cannot be repaired if poison has been applied to them. Remove the poison from the weapon by using an oil cloth, and then repair it.
