Bard Spells
In addition to the basic bard abilities accessible through the skill menu, bards can also use sustained spellsongs to help their party, or hurt an enemy.

Beneficial spellsongs affect all party members and their pets, provided they are within range when the song begins and remain in range. Harmful spellsongs target an individual target, who must also remain in range. Spellsongs require the use of a musical instrument; the instrument must remain in your backpack during the song, but only uses a charge at the beginning of the song. Slayer instruments can increase the effectiveness of harmful spellsongs, but also reduce the effectiveness if used against creatures that oppose the slayer. Exceptional instruments provide no benefit.

To sing a spellsong you must have a Book of Bard Masteries. This book can be purchased from bard NPCs for a nominal cost. Spellsongs are cast just like any other spell, however the effect is sustained - almost indefinitely for beneficial spellsongs, and for a period of time for harmful spellsongs. To halt a spellsong, cast the song again.

There are three bard masteries, corresponding to the three main bard skills. A player can only follow one path at a time, and can only use the spellsongs of that mastery. Your mastery is determined by skill level: the bard skill (provocation, peacemaking, or discordance) that is at the highest base level is your path of mastery. Your mastery skill must be 1.0 points higher than the other two bard skills, otherwise you will have no mastery. For example if you have 100 provocation, 99 peacemaking, and 99 discordance; provocation will be your path of mastery. If you have 100 provocation, 100 peacemaking, and 99 discordance; you will have no mastery and will be unable to use any spellsongs. Your skill level must be at least 90 in order to qualify for mastery.

In addition to being able to use spellsongs, having a mastery provides a bonus 5% chance to success when using that skill. Having a mastery also grants you the choice of an additional overhead skill title. Finally, the skill delay time for using that skill is reduced by one second.

Spellsongs require no reagents to cast. However the mana costs are significant: in addition to the initial cost of casting the spell, mana is consumed every 2 seconds to maintain the song. The upkeep cost depends on the spell as well as the number of creatures affected by the song.

Spellsongs are not affected by faster casting equipment. A bard can only have one spellsong active at one time. A player or creature can be subject to multiple spellsongs at one time, but no more than one of each kind of song. The effectiveness of each song is dependent on the bard's skill level in the path of mastery. The effectiveness of harmful spellsongs is reduced by the magic resistance skill, in both PVP and PVM. If the bard takes significant damage at once (18 in PVP and 25 in PVM), the song will halt.

Spellsongs are harmful or beneficial actions similar to any other spell, so be careful when using them. Using a desponder (discordance) spellsong on an innocent is a criminal action, as is using a beneficial song while you have a criminal or murderer in your party. You will not receive a prompt asking before you perform such an action.
