Animal Taming
Animal Taming is an extremely useful skill, particularly in PVM situations. With no skill cap, almost all dedicated players on ABCUO have some level of taming skill.

To tame a creature, activate the skill from the skill list, then target the animal that you want to tame. Each tameable animal has a minimum skill level associated with it; if your skill level is below it, you will be unable to tame the animal.

Once you have tamed an animal, you can command it by single-clicking on it and selecting the command, or by issuing a verbal command. Direct a creature by saying its name, or command all of your pets by saying "all", and follow it with one of these commands:

kill or attack - attack something
follow - follow a designated target, or yourself
come - walk to your location and then halt activity
stop - halt all activity and wander around
stay - stop moving and remain in place
drop - drop items in the pet's pack. This is for dropping loot items, not items from a pack animal.
guard - stand guard, and attack whatever is attacking you
release - release the pet from your control
transfer - transfer control of the pet to another player
friend - add another player as a friend, giving them limited control of the pet
unfriend - remove a friend from the list of players it will listen to

Pet Care
Tame pets need to be fed. Use the animal lore skill to see your pet's loyalty level. If the animal is not "wonderfully happy" then it could stand to be fed. Use the animal lore skill to see what kind of food your pet prefers, and drop some of the food on the pet. Each time you feed the pet, it may increase inloyalty. An unfed pet is an unhappy pet, and unhappy pets will eventually turn wild and leave your control.

When you are not using your pet, it is safest to put it in stables. An animal trainer NPC will stable your pet for you at a minimal cost. Go to an animal trainer and say "stable" to stable your pet. The number of animals that can be held in stables is based on your animal taming, animal lore, and veterinary skill; at high skill levels of all three, you can hold quite a large number of pets in stables.

Alternately you can shrink your pet by using a shrink potion. This turns your pet into an object that you can carry around with you in your backpack or leave in the bank or at home. Shrink potions can be crafted with the alchemy skill, or purchased from alchemists. Donating members have the option of receiving a blessed everlasting shrink potion.

Bonding
When a tame pet dies, it will be lost forever. If you tame a valuable pet or a particularly strong pet of a given variety, you should bond the pet. When a bonded pet dies, it will become a ghost rather than being lost, and can be resurrected with bandages if you have the veterinary skill.

To bond a pet, first you need to feed it. After feeding, you must wait one week - place the pet in stables or shrink it during this time. After one week, feed it again, and you should receive a message saying that the pet has bonded with you, and when your mouse is floated over the pet it should say (bonded) in the name. You can use the [bondinfo command on the pet to see how much longer you have to wait before the pet is ready to bond.

Almost all complaints about failure to bond are due to the player not having sufficient skill. You must have the required animal taming skill in order to bond a pet, without the help of any +skill jewelry. There is also a minimum animal lore skill necessary to bond a pet.

An alternative to the normal bonding process is to use pet bonding food. Pet bonding food can be purchased in the ABC prize room, and will instantly bond a pet to you.

When properly taken care of, a good bonded pat can last forever. Even though a bonded pet can be resurrected, there are still ways to lose it if you're not careful. A bonded pet can still turn wild if it's not fed, so feed it generously. Pets can also be lost, left out in the woods or single-mindedly hunting a target and leaving your sight. You should always link a crystal ball of pet summoning to your pet, so you can use the crystal ball to summon your pet when this happens. When a pet is not being used, it is always safest to stable or shrink it.

Strategies
When you have multiple pets of the same type with you, in combat situations they can help each other by using their pack instinct. Use the animal lore skill to see which type of pack they belong to. Two animals of the same pack fighting together gives them each a 25% increase in damage. An additional 25% is added for each animal, so if you have a group of 5 animals of a given pack fighting together, they do 100% more damage than if they were fighting alone. Pack instinct only affects PVM situations.

It is best to avoid using paralysis, peacemaking, and provocation when you are taming an animal. If a pet is tamed under any of those conditions, it will incur an additional loss of stats and skills when it is tamed.

When training the taming skill, try to train on creatures that you have a minimum skill level for taming. Once you have tamed an animal, releasing and re-taming will result in no further skill gain, as the pet recognizes you as a previous owner. If you are taming strictly for training purposes, it's best to just kill the animal at that point.

Another option is to train while filling animal trainer contracts. This way you can earn some money while training the skill.

Common Pet Combinations
Here are some of the most popular pets:

Hiryu - Though it takes five pet slots, it has the dismount ability which is sometimes used in PVP situations. It also has high hit points and fire resistance, so is quite useful as a tank. Hiryus are usable as mounts, and in rare occasions may be seen in special colors.

Reptalon - Usable as a mount, has high hit points, and has a paralysis attack as well as fire breath..

Cu Sidhe - Usable as a mount and has high hit points. In rare occasions may appear in special colors.

Two Fire Steeds - Fire steeds have pack instinct so it's beneficial to have two. They are usable as mounts and have fire breath.

Nightmare - The classic prized mount, with a strong attack, fire breath, and magery.

Dark Steed - Similar to a nightmare with a different hue and slightly different stats.

Ki-Rin - Usable as a mount, will attack with lightning while mounted if its master is in severe danger. Strong fighting and magic attacks. Only ridable by males.

Unicorn - Usable as a mount, will cure the owner of poisons. Strong fighting and magic attacks. Only ridable by females.

Lesser Hiryu - Usable as a mount, not as powerful as a normal hiryu but much easier to find.

Dragon - Great for defense, with strong hit points, resistances, attack abilities, fire breath, and magery.

White Wyrm - More offense-oriented than dragons, with strong cold resistance and damage but low fire resistance. Also with fire breath and magery.

Rune Beetle - High poison attacks and poison resistance.

Two Bake Kitsunes - These have strong magery abilities and large mana pools.

Five Large Hellcats or Hellhounds - With pack instinct, a trained pack of hellcats or hellhounds can do an incredible amount of damage, plus they have fire breath.

Five Frenzied Ostards - Pack instinct makes five frenzieds a fearsome weapon, and you can mount one if necessary.

Fire Beetle - Mountable and usable as a portable forge.

Giant Beetle - Perfect for crafters and harvesters, giant beetles are mounts that are simultaneously used as pack animals, with a capacity of 1600 stone. Single-click on the beetle to open its backpack.
